Where black and gold works best

Gold on a near-black ground reads as depth rather than shine, which is why it holds a wall that lighter art tends to disappear against. It sits well on a deep painted wall, on exposed brick, and on the dark panelling that turns up in older flats. Above a fireplace it does the thing Art Deco was designed to do: draws the eye up and gives a room a centre.

In a bright room it behaves differently — it becomes the dark note that stops everything reading as washed out. One print above a console table is usually enough. Three in a row along a hallway is the other version that works.

Choosing a size

Every design here is vertical, in 2:3 proportions, so the shapes stay true whichever size you pick. The useful rule when hanging above furniture: the artwork should span roughly two-thirds the width of the piece beneath it. A narrow console wants a smaller print than a three-seat sofa, and the gap between the frame and the furniture reads best at around 15 to 25 cm.

For a wall with nothing beneath it, go one size larger than instinct suggests. Prints hung in isolation almost always look smaller on the wall than they did in the room you imagined.

Building a set

The six designs share one geometry and one gold, so any combination of them hangs together without further thought. Rising Sun and Ziggurat make the most architectural pair. Plume and Lattice are the softer two and suit a bedroom. Cascade sits comfortably in the middle of any group of three.
